Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian who began her career as a designer in 1930s Paris. While Coco Chanel and Madeline Vionnet designed easy, soft clothes, Elsa Schiaparelli designed unusual, almost shocking garments.
She invented shocking pink and introduced mad prints, buttons and accessories. She was the designer for hard chic, those who want to be shocking. Elsa introduced the upturned shoe hat which became very famous.
Elsa Schiaparelli was the first one to do the boutique look in a store when she started selling her sweaters and accessories in the corner of the her salon. This idea was copied after World War II, and the boutique was born.
World War II marked the end of her business. She retired and never returned to fashion. She died in 1973 at the age of 83.

As Time said of her in 1934, despite putting her on their cover, “ Though her fame continues to spread, one thing keeps Schiaparelli, now in her middle thirties, from becoming the very smartest of the Paris dressmakers. Her designs are too easy to copy. The mutton sleeves and tray shoulders which she sponsored last year were instantly popular on the Champs-Elysees and Manhattan's Park Avenue. But it was not long before every little dress factory in Manhattan had copied them and from New York's 3rd Avenue to San Francisco's Howard Street millions of shop girls who had never heard of Schiaparelli were proudly wearing her models.” This meant that while Chanel continued in the fashion buisness, Schiaparelli had to shut shop despite being more creative and innovative. She had given the world such radically new fashion objects that would one day become common like ensemble outfits, backless swimsuits, built-in bras, shoulder pads, wedgie shoes and waterproof cottons to name but a few, but her legacy could live on only in the work of others. She went into retirement in December 1954 and then wrote her autobiography, “Shocking Life.”

Macro announces the first two special installations for its challenging spaces: Francesco Simeti's Pastiche, and Cuoghi Corsello's Exquisite Corpses. These works, explicitly commissioned by MACRO, are meant to give a new skin to the museum's re-awakening body.
On July 15 the new Director of MACRO, Luca Massimo Barbero, introduced the beginning of a series of special projects, which will occupy the Museum's previously neglected and forgotten spaces. MACRO is inviting young Italian and International artists to produce original works in order to transform the conformation, the atmosphere, and the visual aspect of the museum.
The series starts with the installations of Francesco Simeti for the halls' curve walls, and of the duo Cuoghi Corsello for the walls behind the glass elevators.

Al via il progetto 6ARTISTA
Sarà presentato il 22 giugno nella sede romana di Civita il progetto 6ARTISTA, promosso da Civita e dalla Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, in collaborazione con Allianz.L’iniziativa è finalizzata alla selezione di due giovani artisti a cui sarà data l'opportunità di trascorrere un periodo di residenza di sei mesi (da ottobre 2009 ad aprile 2010 e da maggio a ottobre 2010) presso il Pastificio Cerere, insediamento industriale che fin dagli anni Settanta rappresenta un punto nevralgico della scena artistica romana. Il comitato scientifico che si occuperà di selezionare gli artisti è composto da Mario Codognato, curatore generale del Museo Madre di Napoli, Marcello Smarrelli, direttore della Fondazione Ermanno Casoli, Lorenzo Benedetti, direttore di Art Center De Vleehal a Middelburg (Olanda), l’artista Nunzio, e Ginevra Elkann, vicepresidente della Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli.Durante la residenza, i due artisti selezionati sosterranno un tirocinio presso uno o più studi degli artisti presenti al Pastificio, entrando così in stretto contatto con il dietro le quinte degli atelier. L'iniziativa prevede inoltre uno stage di una settimana presso il Museo Madre di Napoli, un mini corso finalizzato alla stesura di un book e la partecipazione a una conferenza del ciclo "Ping Pang Pong" presso il Centre International d'Art et du Paysage de l'Île de Vassivière, Francia. E’ prevista una mostra conclusiva, che sarà curata da un membro del Comitato Scientifico. Inoltre, Allianz, l'Associazione Civita e la Fondazione Pastificio Cerere acquisiranno un’opera ciascuno tra quelle prodotte durante il periodo di residenza.Il progetto 6ARTISTA è rivolto ad artisti italiani o stranieri residenti in Italia, di età compresa tra i 22 e i 26 anni, che si siano formati presso istituti italiani. Lorenzo, santo, martire, è sepolto nella cripta della confessione di S. Lorenzo f.l.m. unitamente ai santi Stefano e Giustino. I resti furono rinvenuti nel corso dei restauri operati da papa Pelagio II. Numerosissime furono le chiese in Roma a lui dedicate, tra le tante è da annoverarsi quella di S. Lorenzo in Palatio, ovvero l’oratorio privato del papa nel patriarchio lateranense, dove, fra le reliquie custodite, vi era il capo. L’insigne resto fu portato sotto Sisto V al Laterano; nel 1600 venne custodito nella cappella Sistina e nel 1708, sotto Pio VI, nella cappella del Quirinale ed infine in quella Matilde a S. Pietro in Vaticano. Adriano II donò a Carlo Magno alcune reliquie del santo, oggi onorate nella Cattedrale di Strasburgo. M.R.: 10 agosto - A Roma, sulla via Tiburtina, il natale del beato Lorenzo Arcidiacono, il quale, nella persecuzione di Valeriano, dopo moltissimi tormenti di prigionia, diverse verghe, bastoni, flagelli piombati e lastre infuocate, alla fine, arrostito su una graticola di ferro, compì il martirio; il suo corpo dal beato Ippolito e dal Prete Giustino fu sepolto nel cimitero di Ciriaca, al campo Verano

U.S. Citizens for Peace & Justice - Rome
USC4P&J is a non-partisan group of U.S. citizens and international friends who firmly believe there can be no peace without justice. We work to spark debate, raise consciousness and promote positive change through self-education, outreach events and direct nonviolent action.
We believe in the sovereignty of nations and oppose any attempt at military and economic domination of other peoples; in particular we oppose attempts at "regime change" through invasion and occupation and reject the concept of preemptive or preventive war.
We are in favor of negotiation and diplomacy to resolve differences and settle conflicts between peoples and therefore oppose the recourse to war as a means of "establishing order", "bringing democracy" or "eliminating terrorism"; indeed, we consider war to be both an act of terrorism and a breeding ground for terrorism.
We defend human rights and oppose all abuses including torture and rape, imprisonment without due process and the use of chemical, atomic and other weapons of mass destruction.
We believe that those who have abused the human rights of the world's citizens need to face legal prosecution.
We believe that internationally, but particularly in the U.S., military spending needs to be decreased and spending be increased to guarantee basic social services to all citizens.
We believe that economic and political -- but not military -- means should be used to halt nuclear proliferation and to put pressure on all current nuclear powers to disarm. The United States should lead the way by giving the right example, i.e. by initiating unilateral nuclear disarmament at home.
We believe that free and fair elections are one of democracy's core rights and need to be protected.
We believe that open debate and an accurately informed public are fundamental elements of a healthy democracy.
We are firmly convinced that by taking an active role in democracy and promoting social justice, citizens can bring about long lasting, positive change.
As U.S. citizens living abroad, we commit to:
stay involved in U.S. politics from overseas;
work locally with Italian groups to achieve our common goal - peace and social justice;
be part of the bridge making this an international movement;
make our voices heard both at home and abroad.
We welcome all individuals interested in promoting a just and sustainable global society.

January 17, Close Guantanamo Now! - On the 7th anniversary of the arrival of the first detainees at Guantánamo, Amnesty International in Italy plans to march from Piazza della Repubblica to the U.S. Embassy, with 254 activists wearing the infamous orange jumpsuits, one for each of the remaining illegally detained prisoners.
We will join Amnesty, as we have in the past, in calling for the immediate closure of the notorious prison, which has become a worldwide symbol of injustice and violation of human rights.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus relates how the Scythians, Iranian-speaking nomads who roamed the steppes to the west of the Yuezhi in the first millennium B.C., liked to throw marijuana onto bonfires to induce trancelike states. It's possible the buried shaman followed similar practices.
